At SPM we remove ALL packaging materials from plant material before it is installed. Burlap, plastic, metal baskets and other materials can restrict root growth, nutrient uptake and other vital plant processes leading to decline and death. We always excavate the root ball to locate the root flare to determine correct planting depth. Once placed in the ground and backfilled we then install stakes and guys to ensure the short term stability of the plant material. These should never be left on for more than 1-2 years as the tree may become dependent on them and the guys may eventually girdle the tree.
